Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet Film Debuts with a Bang at #3

Originally set to debut in the U.S. on December 12, the highly anticipated film’s release has been postponed to early 2026, though it will still qualify for awards this year. Premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival with additional viewings at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals, the film has seen wide international screenings.

Known in Japan as Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution -Shibuya Incident x The Culling Game Begins, this cinematic installment compiles key episodes from the anime’s second and third seasons. It aired on November 7, performing robustly with 417,700 tickets sold and earning 639,785,800 yen (approx. $4.13 million) in three days, and opened both in IMAX and standard theaters.

Its success continued as it replaced the leading Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film, opening with 807,000 tickets and 1,251,178,500 yen (approx. $8.46 million) in its first weekend. By September 15, it had grossed 33,056,606,000 yen (approx. $224 million), becoming Japan’s second highest-grossing film after Spirited Away.

The film also broke records in China, earning 373 million RMB (approx. $52.53 million) in three days, achieving the highest IMAX opening for a Japanese film. Worldwide, it has become the highest-grossing anime ever, with total earnings of 106,370,568,950 yen (approx. $685 million).
